Fear and loathing at Paks -The fearful shadow of an irreversible tragedy / part 2.

Former members of LMP, who a year ago founded a new green party called PM (Párbeszéd Magyarországért – Dialog for Hungary) also protested against the Paks pact, together with ex-prime minister Gordon Bajnai's political team. The Together-PM alliance organized a protest on Sunday, 2nd February, in front of Hungary's parliament building. The previous day, members of the public also gathered for the same reason outside the Ministry of National Economy.

Gábor Scheiring, economist, former member of LMP, and now a member of PM, emphasized in his last blog post, that the deal Orbán has made with the Russians does not accord with the New Green Deal ideology that has become more and more popular in response to global warming and the financial crisis.

In front of the parliament, another former member of LMP (Politics Can Be Different), and current leading member of the Dialogue for Hungary party, Benedek Jávor (biologist, environmentalist, politician, founding member in 2000 of the environmental NGO Védegylet [Protect the Future], and Chairman of the Committee on Sustainable Development between 2010 and 2013) called the Paks pact, "a symbol of selfish and aggressive political pillage" in his speech at the Sunday protest. He outlined why it was untrue that nuclear energy was cheap and secure or that there were no alternatives.

Former prime ministers Ferenc Gyurcsány and Gordon Bajnai spoke out at the meeting against Orbán's politics, which chained Hungary and the Hungarian people to Russia, in their opinion. However, Bajnai added that Russia was only acting in its own interests. Therefore, he was not against Russians, but Viktor Orbán, whose politics could be essentially symbolized by the Paks pact. Gabor Fodor, leader of the Liberal Party and Imre Szabo, member of MSZP, also spoke at the meeting against the pact.

Dr. Gábor Eröss, leader of the social cabinet of PM, commented on the Paks pact in his latest blog, saying the parliamentary general election on the 6th April will not only represent a judgment of the people on the Paks affair, but also on whether Fidesz has the right to take away from the future generations of Hungary the last chance for advancement, even though a totally anti-nuclear stance is not supported by all the participants.

to be continued....
